HILO >> The state Department of Human Services is helping eastern Big Island residents who receive food stamps get reimbursements for food destroyed by storm-related power outages.

The lower Puna region was hardest hit when Tropical Storm Iselle made landfall over the area last week.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. says there were about 6,800 customers without power as of Tuesday morning.

Human services officials have opened four offices in East Hawaii to help those receiving federal supplemental nutrition assistance, formerly known as food stamps. The deadline to submit reimbursement requests for food spoiled during Iselle is next week Wednesday.

The assistance offices are at the Hawaiian Shores Community Center, Nanawale Estates Community Association, Leilani Estates Community Center Association and at Church of the Nazarene in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
