Maui police officers arrested three men in connection with a botched attempted robbery at a convenience store in Wailuku this morning.

Two men wearing hooded sweaters and masks entered the Minit Stop Store in Wailuku at about 6:50 a.m., demanding money from the cashiers, police said. One of the men wielded what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol while the other carried a pipe, police said.

The men, one 24 years old and the other 25 years old, bolted out the door when they heard police sirens and ran toward Waiale Drive, while a third man drove away in a pickup truck.

Police officers pursued the two men on foot and caught them in front of apartments on Nani Street. Police said the weapons used in the attempted robbery were recovered.

The driver, 23, was arrested after he was stopped driving in the Lahaina direction on Honoapiilani Highway near Carl’s  Jr. Drive in Maalaea. Police said the driver was stopped by traffic enforcement officers after they noticed his pickup speeding and cutting in and out of traffic.

The three men were being held for processing at the Wailuku Police Station, and the investigation into the robbery was continuing, police said.

No injuries were reported.
