Brittany Amano, 15, of Iolani School, and Michael-Logan Jordan, 14, of Kailua Intermediate School, are Hawaii’s top two youth volunteers in the national Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

Amano, a sophomore, began volunteering to help the homeless at age 10 and later founded a nonprofit organization that has helped people in need within her community and as far away as Africa.

Jordan, an eighth-grader at KIS, has donated all his birthday gifts for the past eight years, to children in need. He has collected Christmas cards, clothing and other items for wounded soldiers, and has raised more than $10,000 for the National Arthritis Foundation.

As State Honorees, each student will receive $1,000, an engraved medallion, and an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they will join other honorees from around the nation in early May for four days of recognition events.

At that time, 10 students will be named from among the state-level honorees, as America’s top youth volunteers of 2013.

The awards, now in their 18th year, are staged by Prudential Financial in a partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
