Wahine basketball team routed at Arizona State to begin season

The Hawaii women’s basketball team took an 84-44 drubbing in its 2013-14 season opener at Arizona State Saturday.

The 40-point margin of defeat was UH’s worst under second-year coach Laura Beeman. The Rainbow Wahine shot 30 percent to ASU’s 55.6 and committed 26 turnovers.

While ASU committed 21 turnovers of its own, the Sun Devils dished 22 assists, compared to just four for UH. The Wahine did not hit a 3-pointer in four attempts, while ASU went 9-for-23 from deep.

UH has a quick turnaround to play at Northern Arizona on Sunday.

The Devils of the Pac-12 took a 71-27 lead — their largest — with 10:12 to play. UH junior Ashleigh Karaitiana scored some late points and finished with a game-high 15.

The Wahine committed 15 first-half turnovers as the Sun Devils pressured UH fullcourt, building a 26-point halftime lead.

UH led 5-4 on Kamilah Jackson’s three-point play but the Sun Devils scored the next 10 points and never looked back. Jackson battled foul trouble and finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

The Wahine had a field-goal drought of nearly eight minutes late in the half as they fell behind by 25. ASU took a 44-18 lead at the break on 56.3 percent shooting compared to 23.1 percent for UH.
