The Hawaii Tourism Authority has set a goal to bring 8.7 million visitors to Hawaii in 2014. Beachgoers cooled off in the water off Waikiki on Friday afternoon.

World-famous Waikiki Beach is the fourth-ranking destination chosen by travelers for Labor Day weekend, according to tracking by the Priceline Group.

While cities top the Labor Day weekend destinations, specifically New York City; Chicago and Las Vegas, Oahu’s Waikiki Beach area is ranked fourth.

Maui’s Ka‘anapali just made the Top 20 at No. 19 and was the only other Hawaii destination among the Priceline Top 50 Labor Day destinations.

The ranking is based on more than 30,000 credit card-backed hotel room booking requests using priceline.com, and company tracking shows that city destinations, not beach destinations, have been the most successful at luring Labor Day crowds for the past 11 years.
