Woman arrested in mail theft after officer notices suspicious actions

An off-duty Maui police officer spotted a woman placing mail in someone else’s newspaper box in a Kahului residential neighborhood March 9 and driving away. The officer became suspicious and found numerous pieces of mail that didn’t belong to the woman.

Wailuku patrol officers investigated and later stopped the 41-year-old Haiku woman during a traffic stop. Officers found a large pile of mail on the floor of her car.

Authorities arrested and charged Davelynn Mahi with six counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information and one count of credit card theft. She was released after posting $75,000 bail.

Investigators learned March 12 she had used a stolen debit card in another  case.

Police located her March 13 at the Maui Beach Hotel. She was arrested and charged with second-degree theft, theft of a credit card, fraudulent ose of a credit card, unauthorized possession of confidential personal information, two outstanding warrants and three counts of discharge of sureties, with bail totaling $330,000. She is being held at Maui Community Correctional Center.
