Hawaii’s statewide campaign to raise money for the survivors of the Japan earthquake and tsunamis has ended.

The Aloha for Japan campaign formally ended Tuesday after exceeding $8 million in contributions.

The group was formed a day after the March 11 disasters at the behest of Gov. Neil Abercrombie. Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz coordinated the effort, which involved more than 100 organizations sponsoring fundraising events such as concerts and art shows.

Just two months after the disasters, the campaign reached $6 million in donations.

While the campaign is officially over, donations for disaster victims can still made to the Hawaii chapter of the American Red Cross or the Japan-America Society of Hawaii.
