Big Island man dies after being hit by truck
A Big Island man was killed Sunday when he was struck by a truck while walking on Kawaihae Road in the Waimea area of the South Kohala District.
Police said the victim was walking eastbound on the east shoulder of the roadway just after 1 a.m. when he was hit by a 27-year-old Kupaau driving a a 2010 Nissan Frontier pickup truck had been traveling west on Kawaihae Road near the Door of Faith Church.
The truck veered across the highway and hit the male pedestrian, police said. The victim was taken in critical condition to Kona Community Hospital, where he died at 6:20 a.m.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and released pending further investigation.
Police believe that alcohol and speed were factors in this collision.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646, ext. 229. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300.

That is a horribly constructed sentence! Also, it’s “Kapa`au”, not “Kupaau”.
Sounds like typical drunk-driver target fixation to me. “Oh, get one guy walkin’ on da oddah side da road o’deah. Chee, betta not run ova da bugga. Oops, I wen’ crack um.”
Don’t drive drunk. You see something you want to avoid, and you home right in on it instead. Target fixation.

North Hawaii Community Hospital is just a couple of miles away from that location. Why was the victim taken to Kona Community Hospital?
It could be that North Community Hospital is not equipped or set up to treat a trauma victim.
