Black Republicans cheer Donald Trump for a newfound rhetorical outreach to African-Americans, but say the GOP presidential nominee must take the message beyond arenas filled with white supporters and venture instead to the inner cities he has started talking about at rallies.
AKRON, Ohio >> Black Republicans generally praise Donald Trump’s newfound outreach for African-American votes that typically go to a Democratic presidential nominee.
But they say Trump shouldn’t just make the appeal at his rallies, which have nearly all-white audiences and often are held in majority white communities. Instead, they say Trump must go to the inner cities he’s started mentioning in his campaign speeches.
Meanwhile, many other black voters say the New York billionaire’s outreach is misguided or even offensive, and they say they still plan to back Democrat Hillary Clinton.
They point to Trump’s generalizations about the black community. Trump says blacks have nothing to lose in supporting him, arguing that Democratic policies saddle black Americans with bad schools, crime-ridden streets and no economic opportunities.
Black Republicans should be very careful if they truly believe in party values. When you see established republicans jumping ship it’s time to go find a life jacket.
Trump as usual is eating the naysayers’ lunch.
His outreach to Americans of African Ancestry, however flawed, is scaring the [redacted] out of Crooked Hillary and her hench persons.
All he has to do is dent her ‘fire wall’ a little bit and Crooked Hillary can watch her longed for electoral college majority go a’glimmering in state after state.

Democrats invented hyphenated Americans and have used the concept effectively to maintain control over Americans by encouraging dissent between them. This is naturally backfiring on Mr. Trump – his polling numbers among black voters have dropped since he began this terrible effort – mostly because he’s using fabricated statistics (he’s a very practiced liar) and he’s giving this stump speech only to pure white voters. Hillary State Dept. Helped Jailed Clinton Foundation Donor Get $10 Mil from U.S. for Failed Haiti Project

The new batch of emails showing that the State Department gave special access to top Clinton Foundation donors while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state brings to mind the case of a shady Miami businessman serving a 12-year prison sentence after scamming the government out of millions. His name is Claudio Osorio, a Clinton Foundation donor who got $10 million from the government after the Clinton State Department reportedly pulled some strings.
Osorio got the money from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), a federal agency that operates under the guidance of the State Department, to build houses in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. The OPIC supposedly promotes U.S. government investments abroad to foster the development and growth of free markets. Osorio’s “Haiti project” was supposed to build 500 homes for displaced families in the aftermath of the earthquake. The project never broke ground and Osorio used the money to finance his lavish lifestyle and fund his illicit business ventures. He also ran a fraudulent international company with facilities in the U.S., United Arab Emirates, Germany, Angola and Tanzania that stole millions from investors. Some of the OPIC Haiti money was used to repay investors of his fraudulent company (Innovida), according to federal prosecutors. In September 2013, Osorio was sentenced to 150 months imprisonment and three years of supervised release.

Good news for Trump fans, he is making some states much more competitive, the problem is that these states previously historically Red states.
Donald Trump has upended much of what we thought we knew about U.S. electoral politics. Maybe Republican voters aren’t as conservative as we thought. Maybe candidates can make seemingly crazy statements without harming their prospects. Those were both lessons we learned from the Republican primaries. But the general election has gone more according to script, and Trump hasn’t upended that most basic feature of general elections, the map.
As politics has become more polarized, the electoral map has changed very little from election to election. But because Trump is such an unusual candidate, it seemed possible there would be states in play this year that usually aren’t. Trump himself said he would compete in deep-blue states like California, New York, Oregon and Washington. So far, however, the 2016 map looks a lot like the 2012 map. Some reliably red and blue states are a tad more competitive this year, relative to the country overall, than in recent elections, but Trump has not reshaped the political landscape. And with Clinton leading Trump nationally by about 7 percentage points, the typically uncompetitive states that seem most likely to flip are red, not blue.
Among the 44 states where general election polling has taken place, Hillary Clinton is ahead of Trump in every state that President Obama won in 2012, plus North Carolina. Here are the FiveThirtyEight polls-only adjusted polling averages for each state versus the vote percentage margin between Obama and Romney in 2012:

Here’s the case against the Clinton Foundation, in a nutshell: If Bill and Chelsea Clinton are leading a powerful private philanthropy while Hillary Clinton holds a high-ranking government post, it is guaranteed to create at least the appearance of donations to the foundation in return for access to the government.
Conscious of this danger, the Obama administration extracted an agreement from the foundation to disclose its donors, as a prerequisite for Hillary Clinton becoming secretary of state. That disclosure does not seem to have prevented potential conflicts of interest—but it does undergird two important stories Tuesday.
The Washington Post, using emails revealed as part of a lawsuit by the conservative accountability group Judicial Watch, traces the paths from foundation donors to State Department supplicants. Often, the requests seem to have come through Doug Band, a foundation official and close aide to Bill Clinton, and arrived with Huma Abedin, a close aide to Hillary Clinton at the State Department. (At the end of her time at the State Department, Abedin received a special classification allowing her to also work for Teneo, Band’s consultancy.)
The requests highlighted by the Post run the gamut. Bono, a frequent Clinton Foundation presence, wanted help streaming U2 concerts to the International Space Station. (Neither Abedin nor Band any ideas.) A Los Angeles sports executive who gave $5 to $10 million to the foundation sought help getting a visa for a British soccer player with a criminal record. (“Makes me nervous to get involved but I’ll ask,” Abedin wrote to Band. “then dont,” he replied.) An activist who gave between $100,00 and $250,000 wanted to set up a meeting between Clinton and an executive at Peabody Coal. “Huma, I need your help now to intervene please,” she wrote. “We need this meeting with Secretary Clinton, who has been there now for nearly six months. This is, by the way, my first request.”
Others of those involved seem unusual. The crown prince of Bahrain, an American ally in the gulf, got a meeting, though he requested it both through official channels and through the Clinton Foundation side channel. Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace laureate whose Grameen Bank gave six figures, met with Clinton to discuss his persecution by the Bangladeshi government.
In total, the Associated Press calculates:
More than half the people outside the government who met with Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state gave money—either personally or through companies or groups—to the Clinton Foundation…. At least 85 of 154 people from private interests who met or had phone conversations scheduled with Clinton while she led the State Department donated to her family charity or pledged commitments to its international programs, according to a review of State Department calendars released so far to The Associated Press.
As questions about the Clinton Foundation mount, the organization announced last week that it would not accept foreign or corporate donations if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency. (On Monday, Donald Trump called for a special prosecutor to look into the foundation.) But these stories show why that measure probably should have been taken before Clinton became secretary of state, and why it’s insufficient if she’s president.
Even if every one of the meetings that Secretary Clinton had with foundation donors was a meeting she would have had anyway, the impression that one can pay to play means that there’s no tidy way to wall the two off. If the Clinton Foundation hadn’t existed and been taking these donations, no one would look askance at Secretary Clinton meeting with many of the principals. Barring corporate and foreign donors, while important, seems incomplete if Clinton is president, in charge of not only foreign but domestic policy. Does anyone believe wealthy executives can’t figure out how to give a personal donation and then try to leverage that for corporate aid? This is why there’s an increasing drumbeat for the Clintons to shut down the foundation entirely, or perhaps to mothball it. Any future findings that suggest pay-for-access will only magnify those calls—and hurt Clinton politically.

She looks just like her daddy, despite four plastic surgeries, the youngest one when she’s only 18. What 18-year-old gets plastic surgery unless you’re trying to, I don’t know, thin out the lips and make you look less like your daddy.

The Upshot’s new Senate election forecast gives Democrats a 60 percent chance of winning control of the chamber in November.
Included within this 60 percent is a 17 percent chance that the Senate ends up evenly split with a Democratic vice president providing the tiebreaking vote.
By our count, the Democrats need to win five seats among the 11 most competitive races. (The Democrats will need to win six if Donald J. Trump wins the presidential race; we put Mr. Trump’s chances of winning at only 11 percent). Ten of these seats are held by Republicans, and one by a Democrat, Harry Reid of Nevada, who is retiring.
That the Democrats are favored in this election should not be surprising.
The 2016 Senate elections boded well for the Democrats without any consideration of a possible Trump effect on down-ballot races. In recent history, Democrats have done better in presidential election years than in midterm years, when turnout is lower. Most of the senators up for re-election last went before the voters in the Republican wave election of 2010 — when the G.O.P. made big and broad gains in an anti-Obama environment — leaving Republicans with several potentially vulnerable incumbents.
This year, the Democrats are defending only 10 seats while the Republicans have to preserve 24. On fundamentals alone — that is, historical voting patterns, the candidates’ political experience and fund-raising — the Democrats would have about a 50-50 shot to win the Senate. The latest Senate polling improves this figure to 60 percent.
Why? Why does Trump just not get it with communities of color? Well, two themes emerge: one, like a great deal of complex public policy issues who over simplifies the topic; two, he creates and illustrates by creating caricatures that can at best be considered pejorative and bordering on racial polemic.
“In recent days, across this country, I’ve asked the African-American community to honor me with their vote,” Trump said in Virginia over the weekend. “I fully recognize that outreach to the African-American community is an area where the Republican Party must do better.” Yet he also predicted he’d sweep the black vote during his 2020 reelection campaign. “At the end of four years, I guarantee you that I will get over 95 percent of the African-American vote.”
That would be truly remarkable. As reported in November 2015, the best any Republican has done with black voters in the last few decades was Gerald Ford’s 17 percent in 1976, running against a Southern Democrat in an era when Dixiecrats and Democratic support for segregation were still within recent memory. (At the time, one poll showed Trump pulling 25 percent of the black vote; most analysts predicted the real numbers would be much lower, and here we are.) What’s more, a 95 percent total would match only Barack Obama in 2008, and would exceed his 2012 showing among African Americans.
Nor do his recent appeals seem likely to close the gap much. First, Trump’s approach risks coming across more as lecturing than as reaching out. His comments in Akron were similar to a riff he delivered in Michigan on Friday, calling on black voters to give him a chance.
“You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?”
This paternalistic tone has been Trump’s hallmark of late—for example, in his nomination-acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, where he told listeners, “I alone can fix it.”
Trump’s caricatures of black communities as dens of crime, poverty, and shiftlessness are not likely to win him many fans. (In May, when the journalist Robert Draper asked him the most dangerous place he’d ever been, he quipped, “Brooklyn.” He was probably not referring to the threat posed by Williamsburg gentrifiers.) Not all blacks are living in poverty. While some black Americans live in rough neighborhoods, others do not. And African American voters are widely concerned with racial discrimination, both at the hands of the police and criminal-justice system and otherwise. Calling for more stringent policing is not necessarily the solution that black communities want. Trump, in contrast, has made praising the police a regular part of his speech, and when asked whether he believed African Americans were subject to bias, he said he could empathize because the election system was “rigged” against him.
Trump might be able to craft a more effective outreach message if he were spending meaningful time seeking out African American voters and leaders. But Trump has tended to avoid black organizations and black communities. He skipped the annual convention of the NAACP, which is typically not a friendly audience for a GOP candidate, but which Mitt Romney visited in 2012. Trump supporters complained to The Wall Street Journal that the candidate had skipped out on other chances to speak to black audiences.
“You can go to war zones in countries that we are fighting and it’s safer than living in some of our inner cities that are run by the Democrats.”
Meanwhile, he’s delivering his appeals to black voters in overwhelmingly white places. Trump began his latest African American outreach with what was billed as a speech in Milwaukee, where protests erupted recently after police shot and killed Sylville Smith, a black man. But the event was actually in suburban Washington County, Wisconsin, which is 96 percent white. In Michigan, Trump spoke in Eaton County, which is 88 percent white. During an appearance on CNN Monday night, Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski suggested that Trump felt unsafe holding events in African American centers, an argument likely to alienate black voters even further. It’s certainly true that black communities may not be favorably disposed to Trump, but that’s the problem he’s trying to fix in the first place.
Trump continues to view minority communities through an essentialist lens, as groups whose interests can be distilled to economic insecurity. He tends to speak about them as a monolithic and inherently separate group from himself and his campaign—and, by extension, his base. It’s little wonder black voters aren’t flocking to him. “We’re going to have great relationships with the Hispanics,” he said in May. “The Hispanics have been so incredible to me. They want jobs. Everybody wants jobs. The African Americans want jobs. If you look at what’s going on, they want jobs.” He has since added crime to the list of worries, part of his more recent attempt to position himself as the candidate of law and order.
According to some media narratives, appealing to economic anxiety has been highly successful with white voters. Giuliani Fuels Clinton Health Rumors Again … and Again

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Monday continued to insist that Hillary Clinton’s physical and mental health is failing but again offered no evidence beyond unsubstantiated or debunked theories circulating on the Internet.
Over the weekend, Giuliani, who is a close adviser to GOP nominee Donald Trump, urged people to look for videos on the Internet that support such theories. “Go online and put down ‘Hillary Clinton illness,’ take a look at the videos for yourself,” Giuliani urged on “Fox News Sunday.”
