Body found in Mokuleia identified as missing trail runner

2011 May 16 CTY - Missing Person: Are Hjorungnes CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Are Hjorungnes who was last seen on Peacock Flats trail in Mokuleia on May 14, 2011, at 9:45 a.m. Hjorungnes is an exchange student/teacher at the University of Hawaii. He went hiking with acquaintances on the trail and was separated on the way down. He has not been seen nor heard from since. The Honolulu Fire Department has made checks on foot and by air since yesterday afternoon with negatives results. The body of a man found on a small mountain Saturday in Mokuleia has been identified as the missing trail runner who disappeared on May 14.

Are Hjoerungnes, 40, died of multiple blunt force injuries from an accidental fall from a height, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office determined.

Volunteer searchers found Hjoerungnes’ body about 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the mountain behind Dillingham Airfield. Some suspected he had missed a turn in a trail and fell while trying to go down the mountain.

Hjoerungnes disappeared May 14 during a trail run with an ultrarunning group in the Peacock Flats area.
