Public service areas of Honolulu Hale closed Tuesday afternoon after water was shut off in the building due to a broken water line outside.
The broken pipe left the building without water, restroom facilities or air conditioning, said city Facilities Maintenance Director Ross Sasamura.
Both City Council and the City Clerk’s office closed about 2 p.m., as did the Honolulu Neighborhood Commission office in the Mission Memorial Auditorium complex next door.
While non-essential workers were allowed to go home, the city Treasury Division customer window was left open in case people wanted to walk in their bill payments, Mayor Kirk Caldwell said.
Paul’s Electrical Contracting was doing contracted work on Honolulu Civic Center grounds behind City Hall about 1 p.m. when workers accidentally cut into a water line, Sasamura said.
Sasamura said it’s not clear when water service will be restored.
The nearby Fasi Municipal Building, home of most city agencies, was not affected by the outage. The state Kalanimoku Building, just mauka of Honolulu Hale, also remained open.
