A 21-year-old female visitor from China is in critical condition at a Maui hospital after she was rescued from a pond in the Twin Falls area of Haiku Sunday.

Maui firefighters said she and her husband were swimming when the accident occurred at 2:31 p.m.

When Paia firefighters arrived at 2:51 p.m. they found bystanders performing CPR on the woman. Bystanders searching the pond found the woman submerged underwater below a waterfall, about a couple hundred yards mauka of Hana Highway. The woman was unresponsive and without a pulse when bystanders began CPR.

Fire crews and paramedics took over life-saving efforts and carried the woman back to Hana Highway after she regained vital signs. The woman was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
