Candidate Abercrombie says religion is being used to attack his character

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie is accusing the campaign of his rival, Mufi Hannemann, of using religion to divide voters and attack the former congressman’s character.

In a statement released today, Abercrombie said he was being impugned by a former website called "Atomic Monkey" and a recent campaign flier that was mailed by an independent group called Island Values.

The website was and Island Values is run by strong Hannemann supporters.

Abercrombie says the website and flier are not what someone running for governor should be doing. He says voters should "call (Hannemann) on it."

Abercrombie’s statement was his first on the Island Values group.

Hannemann has said he would ask his supporters not to distribute the flier because it does not allow "full and thorough discussion and evaluation" of Abercrombie’s congressional record on faith and religion.
