More than 1,890 cyclists took part today in the Honolulu Century Ride, a 100-mile event that started at dawn at Kapiolani Park.

Participants rode at their own pace to Hawaii Kai, Kailua and up the Windward side to Swanzy Beach Park and back again.

To ride 75 miles to King Intermediate School and back, participants must pass Kailua by 11 a.m. 

To ride the full 100 miles, they must pass the KEY Project in Kahaluu by 10:30 a.m. Anyone arriving after those times was asked to turn back.

About 300 volunteers provided water and healthy snacks at the rest stops, and local shops Bike Hawaii, Eki Cyclery, The Bike Shop, Island Triathlon & Bike, and McCully Bicycle and Sporting Goods provided mechanical assistance to the riders. 

Back at the park there was food and live performances by Halau Hula O Kawaiho’omulu and the Royal Hawaiian Band.

The annual course is sponsored by the Hawaii Bicycling League, which also promotes bicycle commuting in Hawaii.

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau rated Honolulu as having the 12th highest bicycle commuting rate among the 70 largest cities in the United States.

With an estimated 2.3 percent commute rate, Honolulu is still far behind cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, with nearly 40 percent bike commuters every day, and top U.S. cities like Portland, with a 6.1 percent commute rate.
