City hoping to secure slope that has closed Kaneohe road

The city continues to work with a Kaneohe landowner to secure a mud slope and a rock wall that collapsed last month, closing a portion of Kamehameha Highway near the Hygienic Store.

Peter Hirai, deputy director of the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management, said last month’s heavy rains caused a rock wall owned by Nik Strauser to collapse on Dec. 26. The resulting landslide prmpted officials to clos both lanes of Kamehameha Highway for about 150 yards near Lulani Street.

Hirai said he has been on the phone daily with Strauser as the landowner works to find a way to secure the wall and the mud slope beneath it.

Hirai said traffic is being re-routed around the closed section of Kamehameha Highway using Lulani Street and Kahekili Highway. City officials ask motorists to avoid the area if possible, limiting the detour route to local traffic only.
