Coast Guard helps fishing vessel stay afloat

The Coast Guard went to the rescue of the 66-foot fishing vessel Sea Moon, which reported that it was taking on water and was dead in the water 173 miles north of Oahu.

The vessel, with a crew of six, reported that its engine room was flooded at 11:15 a.m. Monday. The crew was using buckets to bail water out of the boat.

The Coast Guard dispatched an HC-130 Hercules aircraft with dewatering pumps; aMH-65 Dolphin helicopter and the 87-foot cutter Ahi.

The Sea Moon’s sister ship Sapphire also rerouted to the distressed vessel.

The Hercules dropped a dewatering pump to the Sea Moon at 12:51 p.m.

Sea Moon’s crew retrieved the dewatering pump and  was able to stop the flooding and restart the engine. The vessel is enroute to Honolulu Harbor and  is expected to arrive Tuesday afternoon.
