After trailing 10-0 at the half, Colorado struck quickly with 17 unanswered points en route to taking a 31-13 win over Hawaii today in a nonconference football game in Boulder, Colo.
Up 17-13, Colorado struck quickly with a 73-yard touchdown pass from CU quarterback Tyler Hansen to Toney Clemons to give the Buffs some breathing room at 24-13 with 11:45 remaining and then added another scoring pass late, this one from Hansen to Scotty McKnight from 23 yards out to seal the deal.
The Buffaloes went to work in the opening series of the third quarter, going 80 yards on 14 grueling plays, the last one a 4-yard run by running back Rodney Stewart. Aric Goodman added the first of three PATs to make it 10-7 Hawaii with 11:45 remaining in the third quarter.
The Buffalos then sacked UH quarterback Bryant Moniz for a safety on Hawaii’s first possession of the second half as the momentum began to shift into the home team’s favor. Colorado scored again after the safety on a 60-yard drive culminated by Stewart again, this time from 2 yards out. The try for 2 was good.
The Warriors finally got untracked with a good drive of their own, but eventually settled for a 32-yard field goal by Scott Enos that cut the Buffs’ lead to 17-13.
Hawaii let a couple of scoring opportunities slip through their fingers early on, but still managed to take a 10-0 halftime lead. The Warriors converted on a Buffalo fumble and drove 42 yards in only three plays. The last one was a 7-yard scoring strike from UH quarterback Bryant Moniz to slotback Kealoha Pilares to make it 7-0 with 1:35 left in the opening period.
Both teams traded field position for much of the second quarter, but Hawaii was able to strike late on a 31-yard field goal by Enos as the second quarter ended.
The first quarter of today’s game will be remembered for the two blown scoring opportunities Hawaii had as much as anything else. Twice the Warriors had first and goal from inside the 5 and twice they came up empty.
A fumble on a fourth and 1 by Moniz ended the first scoring chance and the second one, set up on a fumbled punt return by Colorado, resulted in a missed 20-yard field goal by Enos.
