Relief from the past weekend’s humid weather should arrive by Monday evening with drier conditions and stronger tradewinds. But remnants of former Tropical Storm Genevieve could bring more muggy weather with the potential for heavy rain by Thursday or Frdiay, National Weather Service forecasters said.
Genevieve’s remnants, about 715 miles southeast of Hilo at 8 a.m., could re-intensify over the next two days as it moves west. Forecasters give it a 30 percent chance of reaching tropical storm strength again. Another system, about 700 miles south southeast of the Big Island, also has a 30 percent chance of becoming a tropical storm.
Until Genevieve nears the state, cooler tradewind weather, with windward and mauka showers, is expected through at least Thursday.
Forecasters say the muggy weather should reach the Big Island by Thursday evening and spread to the rest of the state over the weekend.
Meanwhile, far to the east, former Hurricane Hernan is falling apart as it moves over cooler waters and encounters wind shear.
Tropical Storm Hernan was about 485 miles west southwest of Baja, California in Mexico at 11 a.m. with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.
The storm is too far away to say if Hernan’s remnants will have an effect on Hawaii’s weather.
