Cyclist killed by SUV in hit and run near Wheeler

A bicyclist died along Kamehameha Highway near Wheeler Army Airfield just outside Wahiawa late last night and police are asking the public’s help trying to find the driver of the vehicle that hit him.

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Zachary Manago, 18, of Honolulu.

Police said they are looking for a white sport utility vehicle that was traveling north toward Wahiawa around 11:10 p.m.

Manago was traveling with other cyclists was heading north along the shoulder of the highway about a half mile south of Leilehua Golf Course Road when he was struck from behind and thrown from the bike onto a grassy shoulder.

Manago was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was riding a black bicycle, possibly customized, using lights and was wearing a helmet.

The death was the 62nd on Oahu roads this year, surpassing the 55 in all of 2009.
