Three Maui hunters needed assistance from Makawao firefighters when they got disoriented by fog and darkness on the Waiakoa Loop Trail early this morning.
Maui fire investigators say a condominium fire caused $1.5 million to the building complex and $120,000 damage to its contents.
It took Maui firefighters more than five hours early Friday morning to control the fire that destroyed an unoccupied vacation unit in Kihei and also displaced occupants in eight other units surrounding it.
About 40 units at the Hale Kamaole vacation condominium complex had to be evacuated after the alarm was called in at 9 a.m. Thursday. Fire companies from Wailea, Kihei, Wailuku, Kahului, Lahaina and Makawao responded to the fire at 2737 South Kihei Road. The fire was contained at 2:38 a.m. , but the third floor unit was totally destroyed, fire officials said.
The fire extended to the unit on the makai side, with this unit sustaining damage to it’s roof and storage closet on the balcony. Other units surrounding the burned unit sustained smoke and water damage.
Maui fire Inspectors said the fire does not seem to be intentionally set, but have not been able to determine the exact cause. No injuries were reported.
