A 58-year-old visitor from Washington state died Saturday after experiencing distress while snorkeling at Honolua Bay in Napili.

Witnesses pulled the man, identified as Alan Southard, to shore at about 12:30 p.m. and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived, according to a Maui Police Department report.

Southard was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died.

An autopsy is pending.
