State boating officials on Maui worked to remove debris from three boats that broke up after they were torn from their moorings Friday and ran aground near Mala Wharf.

The boats were the 30-foot fiberglass sailboat Best Revenge, the 30-foot sailboat Caribou III and the 38-foot trimaran Triple Play, the state said. Their debris washed ashore near Mala Wharf.

A set of five large waves tore them from their moorings off Mala Wharf Friday about 10 a.m.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation’s Lahaina harbor office cautioned the public about debris along the shore or in the surf break.

The DLNR said a salvage company contracted to remove the Best Revenge did not respond Saturday and that the vessel was in pieces scattered along the shoreline. The fuel was removed from the boat.

Marine salvage company Parker Marine removed most of the debris of the Caribou III on Saturday, DLNR said.

DLNR was seeking a bid to remove debris from Triple Play, which was scattered along a half-mile stretch of the Mala shoreline. Residents have been hauling pieces to shore, DLNR said.
