Earthquake shakes Taiwan; No tsunami threat to Hawaii

An earthquake shook Taiwan, but did not generate a destructive tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Saturday.

The earthquake struck at 5:43 a.m. Taiwan time, about 7:43 p.m. Hawaii time.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.2. It was centered about 14 miles south southeast of Bull, Taiwan and 27 miles east southeast of Nantou, Taiwan at a depth of 12.4 miles.

There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or damage.

The warning center said, based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, there is no danger of a destructive widespread tsunami threat.
