EPA fines state $110,000 over Big Island cesspools

The state Housing Finance and Development Corp. has been fined $110,000 for failing to close large-capacity cesspools at its Jack Hall Memorial Housing property on the Big Island.

The fine was recently announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

In 2005, the EPA entered into an agreement with the state agency’s predecessor, the Hawaii Community and Development Corp., to close over 100 large-capacity cesspools by March 2009.

The 13 cesspools at Jack Hall Memorial Housing were included in the agreement.

The cesspools at Jack Hall are now to be closed two years later than the deadline. In addition to paying the fine for missing the March 2009 closure date, the EPA says a new closure date of March 2011 has been set.
