    Anson Kimura

A 57-year-old retired Honolulu police sergeant pled guilty today to accidentally shooting a South King Street bartender last year.

Sgt. Anson Kimura, who retired from the police force in May 2015 with 25 years of service, will be sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Colette Garibaldi on Oct. 19.

Kimura was charged with second-degree assault in connection with a shooting that occurred April 3, 2015, at King’s Sports Bar while he was off duty.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ayla Weiss said her office will seek the maximum jail term of five years when Kimura is sentenced.

Thomas Otake, Kimura’s attorney, said he will seek probation for Kimura.

Kimura is free after posting $5,000 bail.

Police said a 41-year-old female bartender was shot in the stomach when Kimura’s handgun accidentally discharged.

He was placed on restricted duty until he retired a month after the shooting.

The police department is conducting its own internal investigation.

  • Seriously? FIVE years? The prosecutor’s office really got nothing better to do, like investigate the chief’s special mailbox destruction unit??

Jeeeez…give the guy probation and make him serve community service…school talks about how stupid it is to play with guns, for starters…

  • This sergeant is more than bizarre. How irresponsible. He needs some prison time before being released on probation. No way is he a credit to HPD. His career is done.

    • Didn’t we just pass a law forbidding law enforcers from drinking and carrying a firearm after this incident? Is it in effect now? A lot of alcoholics in FBI, HPD, and security guards packing arms. Would be nice to hold surprise spot breathalyzer tests just like sneak quizzes in school.

  • Police officers are legally allowed to carry even while off duty. It is not uncommon for off duty officers to have stopped criminals in the act in many instaces and to have affected arrests.
This shooting was from what I am aware was an accidental shooting. Was it irresponsible and negligent, most definitely but not deserving of a prison sentence.
Had the woman died as a result of Kimura’s negligence, I think it would be fair to argue for either jail or a prison term. In this case, the Prosecutor’s Office seems to be playing to the
crowd and for show in asking for the imposition of a prison sentence.
I wish SA would look into the condition of the woman who was seriously wounded in this case. Being shot point blank in the stomach area is very serious and it is very fortunate for
Kimura that the woman managed to survive but I am sure that she suffered terribly and may even now be suffering complications from her injuries.

    • You are allowed to carry if you are not impaired by alcohol if you are drinking by LEOSA you should not be carrying nor should one be driving because of impaired judgment, common sense.

    • HPD policy at the time of the shooting did not prohibit drinking while carrying off duty…almost every law enforcement agency prohibits this as incidents like these has happened before…not only is Sgt. Kimura is responsible but so is HPD for this lack of oversight ……

    • I disagree, he was drunk, negligent and shot someone yet Police allowed him to leave the scene without so much as a sobriety test. Furthermore “exceeds expectations Kealoha then allowed him to retire without penalty or even suspension. Completely unbelievable and reinforces the public perception that there are different rules for HPD officers that get caught breaking the law.
If you or I had accidentally shot someone in a bar while drinking, we would not have been allowed to leave the scene. It would have been a one way trip to OCCC with no bail.

  • Such a grand exit for the skank after 25 meritorious years of service with HPD, I’m sure. You should have just listened and “…buy me drinkie”….
