A Maui High School English teacher, who had also served as head football coach, pleaded no contest today to five counts of indecent electronic display to a child.

David Van Bui appeared before Judge Blaine Kobayashi in Maui Circuit Court in Wailuku and entered his no-contest pleas.

Bui is scheduled to be sentenced on July 14.

A criminal complaint filed March 30 alleges Bui exposed his genitals or committed lewd or lascivious acts over a computer online service, Internet service or local bulletin board service from May through September 2014.

The complaint also alleges that Bui knew, should have known or had reason to believe that the transmission was viewed on a computer or other electronic device by a minor known to him to be under the age of 18.

The complaint lists each month as a single count.

Bui, who taught English to ninth- and 10th-graders since August 2004, was placed on paid department-directed leave in February 2015, a state Department of Education spokeswoman said.

Bui also coached the school’s football team starting in 2005 and became head coach in 2011, but he resigned from the position in February 2015, she said.
