Fire destroys Nuuanu home, displaces 3

Michael Tsai

Three people were displaced Monday evening by a fire that destroyed a two-story house on Easy Street in Nuuanu.

The fire was first reported at 8:08 p.m. and the first fire company arrived at 8:15 p.m. to find more than 50 percent of the home in flames, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.

The three occupants of the home — a man, a woman and a female child — were able to escape on their own without serious injury.

Initiating a rapid attack against the blaze despite the narrow, congested street, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 8:23 p.m. and had it fully extinguished by 8:55 p.m., Seelig said.

Next-door neighbor David Kaneda said his wife woke him to alert him about the fire.

"I went outside and the whole house was engulfed," Kaneda said. "Neighbors from down the street were already out there shooting water at the fire and shooting my roof to keep it from catching. The heat was so intense the glass from the windows were cracking."

Dozens of neighbors lined the street as firefighters battled the blaze, the smoke from which spread across nearby Pali Highway

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are yet available.
