Maui fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of two separate brush fires which were reported Tuesday in Lahaina at an area frequented by homeless campers in Waihee.

The first fire was reported at 8:23 a.m on Kahekili Highway in Waihee.

Firefighters arrived at 8:33 a.m. and found a 20-by-30-foot strip of grass on the makai side of the highway on fire. The fire, which was a quarter mile north of the Waihee Stream bridge, was extinguished at 9 a.m.

At 10 a.m., firefighters in West Maui responded to a brush fire near Honoapiilani Highway and Dickenson Street in Lahaina.

The fire was reported mauka of Honoapiilani Highway, and between Dickenson and Prison Streets. At one point, the fire came to within 150 feet of a nearby home before it was extinguished.

The fire was brought under control at 11:15 a.m. and extinguished at 3:30 p.m.

At 5:51 p.m., firefighters were called back for a flare-up that reignited in an area of large trees and heavy brush frequently used by the homeless community for encampments.
