Honolulu firefighters rescued eight people trapped for nearly two hours in a monorail car more than 30 feet above the ground at Pearlridge Center Monday night.

According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig, the car stopped on the suspended rail system just short of the Ross Dress For Less store due to a mechanical failure. Trapped inside the car were one adult male, three adult females, and four children.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m.

Once it was confirmed that there was not power going through the rail system, the rescuers raised about 50 feet of ladder from a quint truck at an angle to reach the car. They then used a rope system to secure each person as they walked them down the ladder one at a time, Seelig said.

All eight people were safely on the ground by 9:15 p.m.
