Firefighters rescue lost paddleboarder off Maui

Firefighters rescued a 30-year-old stand-up paddleboarder off Spreckelsville on Maui after she lost sight of her fellow paddleboarder.

At about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, firefighters responded to a paddleboarder from Oakland, Calif. who called 911 on her cell phone, seeking help to get back to shore.

The fire department said she was paddling downwind from Maliko Bay with a male paddler from Makawao, but fell behind and lost sight of him. The female paddleboarder had a difficult time finding their destination at Kaa Point in Kanaha, also known as Kite Beach.

Firefighters conducted a search of the area using Air One and a rescue watercraft. At nightfall, Air One ended their search. The fire department said the rescue watercraft found the paddler about a half-mile off of Stable Road, at the end of the Kahului airport runway.

At 6:30 p.m., firefighters brought her to Kaa Point.
