The Big Island is under a flash flood warning as heavy rains, falling most of the day, continued.into the morning.

At 10:06 p.m,, radar showed a heavy shower 12 miles west of  Volcano, or about 27 miles southwest of Hilo,.moving southwest at 10 mph. Radar also showed additional showers forming and moving ashore along the Kau coast. 

Other locations in the advisory, in effect until 1:15 a.m., include Wood Valley, Pahala, Punaluu Beach, Punaluu, Kawa Flats and Naalehu.

The rains are from remnants of what was once tropical storm Fausto, which are moving over the islands, bringing muggy and rainy weather.

Clouds and moisture from the remnants of Fausto were over the Big Island and Maui Sunday and were expected to continue to move up the island chain.

Most of the rain from the system should fall in windward areas, but some rain could fall over leeward areas. Some of the rain over windward and southeast slopes could be “briefly heavy,” forecasters said. The Big Island could see thunderstorms.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for a 50 percent chance of rain Sunday night and a 70 percent chance of rain on Monday.

The passing system may disrupt the tradewinds, bringing muggy conditions Monday. Tradewinds should begin to return Tuesday and Wednesday.

In addition, high clouds overhead may “occasionally filter the sun, and add color to the sky during sunrise and sunset,” according to the National Weather Service.
