Moisture from the south and unstable weather conditions in the atmosphere are creating rain clouds over the western half of the state Sunday.
Kauai County is under a flash flood watch until 6 a.m. Monday because of the threat of more heavy rains.
A flash flood warning had been issued earlier in the morning.
Kamalu Road near Wailua Homesteads Park and Hauaala Road near the river crossing Kapaa is closed, according to the Kauai Civil Defense Agency.
Weliweli Road in Koloa at the Ala Kinoiki junction was closed due to flooding, but reopened after the warning expired Kauai officials said.
The National Weather Service says that it is possible the watch could extend to Oahu depending on the development and movement of a weather system west of the islands.
Forecasters says Kauai could also see thunderstorms and that soils there saturated because of previous rains over the last few days raising the threat of flooding.
The forecast for Oahu calls for Kona winds, cloudy skies, vog and showers.
Maui County and the Big Island should only expect a few showers Sunday night and Monday though the southeast winds near the Big Island may allow for a few more showers over the Puna and southeast Kau districts.
Frequent showers are forecast for Monday morning in Honolulu when thousands of runners are expected for the Great Aloha Run.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, lingering moisture over all islands will keep skies cloudy with passing showers. Winds will remain light through Thursday mainly from a southeasterly direction.
Trades could return on Friday.
