Foodland Waipio evacuated after freon leak

A freon leak forced the evacuation of Foodland Waipio Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded to a call about 10 a.m. and found a cooling system in the back of the structure released about 800 pounds of freon, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman David Jenkins.

He said the system no longer had any more freon and what was released had dissipated. The scene was released about noon.

Jenkins said two employees discovered the leak at the supermarket at 94-1040 Waipio Uka St. and called firefighters. The cause of the leak was not immediately known.

Freon is the cooling agent used in most air conditioning systems.
