A cold front that moved over the state overnight was southeast of Hawaii island this morning. Scatted clouds behind the front can be seen in this satellite image.

Rough surf of 10 to 15 feet, created by a combination of strong north winds and a northwest swell prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high surf advisory.

The advisory, in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, is for north and west shores of Kauai County, and north shores of Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.

The gusty winds also prompted a wind warning for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, where winds of 55 to 65 mph could gust to 80 mph until Monday morning. A wind advisory is also in effect for parts of the Big Island and Lanai exposed to the strong winds, including north and east Kohala, and Hilo, Volcano and Honokaa. On Lanai, the advisory includes Manele and Lanai City.” forecasters said.

“The strongest winds will be found in the South Kohala area, including Kawaihae, Waikaloa and Waimea. Another area of strong winds will occur from Hilo southward through the Puna District.

Winds of 20 to 30 mph could gust to 50 mph and make driving high-profile vehicles difficult.

“Some weaker tree species such as Albizia may shed branches, especially in areas that rarely see strong winds. Lightweight outdoor objects may be blown around and should be secured before winds increase,” forecasters said.

The rest of the state can also expect windy and cool weather on Super Bowl Sunday.

The forecast calls for high temperatures to only reach the 70s today and for north winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusting to 45 mph under partly sunny skies.

Temperatures could drop down into the 50s again in some places at night.

The winds should die down by Monday. But cool temperatures will stick around for the next several days.
