MANILA, Philippines >> A Philippine senator has filed a criminal complaint against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for allegedly rigging the 2007 elections that robbed him of his victory.
Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III says that he also included Arroyo’s husband and several top officials during her presidency in the complaint he filed Monday before a joint investigating panel of the Department of Justice and Commission on Elections.
Pimentel says fraudulent actions allowed a then pro-Arroyo candidate, Juan Miguel Zubiri, to beat him by a few thousand votes.
Pimentel filed a protest before the Senate’s election tribunal, which declared him the winner in August after a long recount. Zubiri resigned and Pimentel took his seat. Arroyo denied any wrongdoing.
