Former TV newsman Kirk Matthews dies

Longtime Honolulu TV news anchor and reporter Kirk Matthews, who had been diagnosed with lung cancer, died today at his Honolulu home.

Matthews, 69, was hired at KHON2 in the summer of 1987, and retired in 2014, KHON2 reports. He had a successful career in radio and television in Oregon and came to Hawaii in 1983.

He is remembered as a talented professional TV newsman, but also as someone who was a nice, funny guy, who was well-liked by audiences, colleagues and friends.

Matthew is survived by wife, Linda Coble, also a former TV news anchor and reporter.
