Four brush fires hit the H-2 freeway since Tuesday

Firefighters this morning were sent to their fourth brush fire along H-2 freeway southbound since Tuesday.

Two lanes of H-2 southbound were closed for about an hour as a result of today’s 11:20 a.m. blaze, which occurred on the embankment on the Waianae side about three-quarters of a mile past the Mililani offramp, and just south of Kipapa Bridge, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Investigators have not found the ignition sources for the fires and are still looking for possible causes, Seelig said. “But especially with the pattern, it appears most likely they were intentionally set,” he said.

Seelig urged the public to call 911 immediately when they spot the fires. While all four of the fires have been relatively small, they have disrupted traffic and had the potential to grow and become a danger to property, he said.

Yesterday, firefighters battled two blazes along the H-2 – one near Kipapa Bridge and the other near the H-1/H-2 merge.

Tuesday’s blaze happened near the Ka Uka offramp, Seelig said.
