Freed Myanmar democracy icon seeks to revive party

YANGON, Myanmar >> Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is seeking to revive her political party following her release from house arrest last year.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is launching an appeal to the Supreme Court to challenge a ruling by the military regime that rendered her party defunct.

One of her lawyers, Nyan Win, said Thursday that her legal team was in the capital of Naypyitaw to submit the appeal.

Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy lost its legal status because it failed to reregister in order to take part in general elections last year. Party leaders said the balloting would be neither free nor fair.

The party won a landslide victory in the previous election in 1990 but was not allowed to take power by the military.
