Friends identified the 18-year-old woman who died in a moped crash Wednesday in Hawaii Kai as Kristi McQuaid.

Kaiser High School principal Justin Mew confirmed McQuaid was scheduled to graduate this year after completing summer courses.

McQuaid’s friend Kat Sester said McQuaid was looking forward to graduating.

“She was really happy to be free,” she said. “Everything was going really well for her.”

Police said McQuaid’s moped hit a curb and a light pole across the street from Kaiser High School. McQuaid died at the scene from head injuries just after 11 p.m.

McQuaid was traveling south on Lunalilo Home Road and was not wearing a helmet.
