A good Samaritan helped an elderly woman escape her burning home on Maui Saturday, then used a garden hose to control the fire.

According to the Maui Fire Department, the passer-by noticed the fire at the Wailuku Heights home shortly before 11 a.m. and helped the female occupant safely evacuate.

The passer-by used a garden hose to contain the fire, which burned an exterior wall area at the back of the home, until firefighters arrived to extinguish it.

The cause of the fire has been classified as “undetermined,” but fire officials believe it was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.

Damage from the fire was estimated at $5,000. No injuries were reported.
