LOS ANGELES » Los Angeles police have shot and killed a gunman they say opened fire at a shopping mall.

City News Service says a suspected shoplifter fired a shot at a security guard at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza around 4 p.m. Wednesday Hawaii time.

There were shoppers in the mall but police Lt. H. Fanfassian says nobody was hit and the man ran out into a nearby neighborhood.

KCAL-TV says police dogs tracked the man to a garage on Angeles Vista Boulevard where a confrontation took place and the man was shot. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Other details remain sketchy.
