Hawaii County police have identified the 53-year-old Keeau woman who died Saturday in a head-on collision as Anh Kim Tran.

The traffic accident happened just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday on Route 130, south of the Route 139 intersection in Keaau.

Police said Tran was driving a 2001 Mercury four-door sedan and traveling north on Route 130 when she crossed the center median and collided with a 1999 Mercedes Benz multi-purpose vehicle traveling south. She was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she died.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 56-year-old woman from Keaau, and her 23-year-old daughter also were taken to Hilo Medical Center.

Police said alcohol or drugs were not factors in the accident.

Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

This was the first traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year, compared with none at the same time last year.
