Hawaii island fire rescue personnel had to swim to an islet in the Wailuku River late Thursday afternoon to rescue an 18-year-old man stranded there.

The Fire Department responded to the 5:07 p.m. alarm and were on scene at 5:17 p.m. at Ululani Street and Wailuku Drive.

Rescue personnel used rope tethers and swift-water equipment and techniques to bring the man to shore in very high water.

The man was uninjured and refused further medical and evaluation or transport.

The Fire Department launched a helicopter and five other companies, using 11 firefighters in the rescue.
