Hawaii island man dies after mo-ped crash in South Kona

A Captain Cook man died Thursday night from injuries sustained in a mo-ped crash on Painted Church Road in Honaunau, South Kona.

He was identified as Shyden D. Bento, 23.

Responding to a 9:07 p.m. call Thursday, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was driving a 2001 Honda mo-ped north on Painted Church Road when he ran off the right side of the road and struck a rock wall. He was not wearing a helmet.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have asked for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 11th traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year compared with seven at this time last year.
