Hawaii stuns No. 4 Cal State Fullerton in series opener

Austin Wobrock hit a two-out infield single that dribbled down the third-base line, allowing Conner George to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in Hawaii’s 4-3 victory over No. 4 Cal State Fullerton on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Wobrock and Stephen Ventimilia each had two hits and Lawrence Chew worked a perfect ninth inning to help Hawaii (9-27, 4-9 Big West) win for just the second time in its last 12 games.

The Rainbows roughed up Cal State Fullerton starter Thomas Eshelman for three runs on six hits in his shortest outing of the year.

Eshelman was relieved with one out in the fourth, failing to pitch into the sixth inning for the first time all year for the Titans (34-7, 10-3), who lead Cal State Northridge by one game in conference.

Chew (1-1) retired all four batters he faced to earn the win in relief of Connor Little, who allowed three runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings. Little walked two and struck out three, throwing 120 pitches.

Koby Gauna (2-1) allowed one run on two hits in four innings in relief of Eshelman to take the loss for Fullerton.

The series continues Saturday night at 6:35.
