The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative and the companies of Hawaiian Electric Co. ranked among the top 10 utilities nationally for the amount of new solar power added to their grids last year, according to a report released Monday by the Solar Electric Power Association.

Hawaiian Electric Co. added 329 watts of solar generating capacity per customer on Oahu in 2013, the fifth highest of any utility nationwide, according to the SEPA.

Hawaii Electric Light Co., which serves Hawaii island, ranked seventh with 183 watts per customer. Maui Electric Co. was eighth with 178 watts per customer, while KIUC was ninth with 167 watts per customer.

Hawaii’s utilities also fared well in other categories in the SEPA report. HECO ranked 4th in the cumulative amount of solar energy per customer on Oahu at 703 watts. HECO also ranked 10th in cumulative systemwide solar energy capacity at 209 megawatts. The ranking was notable given the fact that other utilities on the list are much larger than HECO.
