Health care leaders meet to discuss doctor shortage in Hawaii

Health care leaders from across the state are meeting this week to discuss the worsening shortage of physicians in Hawaii.

More than 100 people will attend the Hawaii Physician Workforce Summit, which convenes tomorrow in Waikiki.

The summit includes information from a study that details the lack of an appropriate number of physicians working in the state.

The Hawaii Physician Workforce Assessment concludes that the state has about 20 percent fewer doctors than it should when compared to physician-to-population ratios nationally.

The report is scheduled to be presented to the state Legislature next year.
