Heavy rains prompt flood advisory on Oahu

The National Weather Service at 6:23 p.m. issued a flood advisory for Oahu until 9:30 p.m.

Doppler radar indicated very heavy rain fall at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour along the H-1 from Makakilo to Aiea.

Minor flooding and ponding is expected, officials said.

The advisory includes Honolulu, Aiea, Ewa, Kunia, Pearl City, Kapolei, Ewa Gentry and Makakilo.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Oahu after an area of heavy showers developed over Mililani and Wahiawa early this afternoon.

The rains, with possible rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour, are slowly moving south, forecasters said.

The advisory, in effect until 4:15 p.m., includes Honolulu, Kapolei, Makakilo, Waipahu, Waianae and Barbers Point.

Forecasters warn that the rains could make driving dangerous because of water on the road, poor visibility and braking action.

Residents should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding and should not cross flowing or rising waters.

Forecasters expect today’s pattern of mostly sunny and humid mornings, followed by scattered to numerous afternoon showers over interior sections to continue Sunday and Monday. There’s a greater chance of rain on Memorial Day as the remnants of a front move over Oahu.

The front is expected to move over Kauai Sunday afternoon or evening, but the exact timing is subject to change, forecasters said.

The rains should shift to windward and mauka sections after the front passes and as northeast tradewinds return, folowing the passage of the front. But leeward sections could still see some afternoon showers.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for a 40 to 50 percent chance of rain through Monday night, with highs between 78 and 85 degrees and lows of 64 to 73 degrees.
