High surf advisory for south shores through Monday

A high surf advisory is in effect for the south shores of all islands until Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said.

A low pressure zone east of New Zealand last week generated a swell that will hit the islands over the next few days, the agency said.

Surf is expected in the 5- to 8-foot range, generating strong breaking waves and currents that could make swimming difficult and dangerous.

Meanwhile, a weak surface trough is passing south of the state, generating windward and mauka showers as well as light winds, the weather service said. High pressure will be building to the north this week, producing moderate tradewinds.
