Two 22-year-old men, who spent Monday night in the Koolau mountains near Laie Falls, walked out on their own Tuesday after declining help from firefighters.
Fire Department spokesman Dave Jenkins said the pair planned to hike to Laie Falls behind the Mormon Temple and then decided to hike to Pupukea.
The fire department received a cellphone call from the two men at 7:44 p.m. Monday, when they were unable to complete their hike, Jenkins said.
The two had their cellphones but did not have flashlights. They were advised to shelter in place until Tuesday morning.
Fire rescue personnel set up a command post at the Boy Scout camp at Pupukea Tuesday to coordinate a rescue effort.
But the two men on Tuesday declined assistance from firefighters when the sun came up, and walked out on their own.
The pair did not tell firefighters where they intended to end their hike on Tuesday, Jenkins said.
